Homemade Stories

"Chin Bucket!" said the dad. "How about, yes him do!,"said the dad. "I don't think him know you. The king does," said the mom. "I think him is the king." "I think him knows you because you are his loyalty, cause you work here." "Now him's gonna fire me!"

In some of the only free time I'd had for the past several weeks, I enjoyed a story read to me by a little preschooler who cannot yet read. She made up a really interesting story line with some intriguing complications that lasted for over five minutes, her little fingers turning the pages of a children's fact book, and spontaneously assigning character roles out of the faces she see. From what I understood, George Washington was the dad, Abraham Lincoln was his son, and there were two moms. I'm not sure who either of the moms was, but I know that they were sisters.

She really got into it, dramatizing the dialogue to fir the character and toning down the narration. And now, she's finally finished and about to start it again. It'll be different this time, of course. But it'll still be great.
